Your Health Checklist: Syringe and Needle DisposalWhen you have Diabetes some of the tools you use to manage it may include a needle, and can be dangerous if not disposed of correctly.Anything with a needle such as syringes, pens, and lancets for monitoring, need to be thrown away safely.Follow this checklist to keep yourself, your family, pets, and neighbors safe when disposing of needles.Do: Put all objects with needles into a Sharps or heavy plastic bottle container after you use them.Do: Fill the Sharps container only about 3 quarters full.Do:Keep your Sharps container in a safe place, out of the way of children and pets.Do: Look up Sharps disposal rules in your area. There may be special drop off areas for you to use. Some local pharmacies can provide information about sharps disposal.Or call Safe Needle Disposal at 1-800-643-1643 for more information.Do not: Throw away old needles, pens, lancets, or a filled Sharps container in your normal trash.Do not: Store your Sharps container with the lid open.If you have any questions about disposing of your needles and other diabetes products, talk with your healthcare provider.This program is for informational purposes only.
