La hemocromatosis es una afección que se produce cuando el cuerpo tiene demasiado hierro. El cuerpo necesita hierro para producir hemoglobina. La hemoglobina es la molécula que los glóbulos rojos usan para transportar el oxígeno desde los pulmones al resto del cuerpo. Si tiene hemocromatosis su cuerpo absorbe y almacena demasiado hierro. Esto puede dañar su corazón, su hígado y su páncreas.
